Lieutenant General Sidney B. Berry

Berry was appointed the 50th Superintendent of the United Stales Military Academy by the President in May 1974 and assumed his duties as Superintendent in July 1974. General Berry was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on February 10, 1926. He attended school in Hattiesburg and entered the United States Military Academy in July 1944. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Infantry upon graduation from the Academy in 1948. Following combat service in Korea in 1950-51, where he served with the 35th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division as platoon leader, rifle company commander, and battalion operations officer, General Berry returned to the United States to attend Columbia University for graduate studies. He received a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from Columbia in 1953./spanbr/ br/ span class="large"For the next three years General Berry served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy./spanbr/ br/ span class="large"Alter attending the Marine Corps Staff and Command Course from 1960 to 1961, General Berry served three years as Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense./spanbr/ span class="large"General Berry served two tours of combat duty in Vietnam. He served as Senior Advisor, 7th Infantry Division (Vietnamese), United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam from July 1965 to June 1966 and as Brigade Commander, 1st: Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Army, Pacific (Vietnam), from June 1966 to February 1967.
